9th International Summer Academy 'Energy and the Environment'
July 21-28, Greifswald and Berlin, Germany

Energy Transition: Expansion and Integration of Renewable Energy

Climate change and energy use are inextricably linked. Energy consumption is the source of the emissions that cause climate change. Climate change, in turn, is the major drive behind the development of renewable energy sources (RES) and clean technologies. Due to this interdependent relationship, effectively mitigating climate change is impossible without a matching, ambitious energy policy. In fact, major climate protection policies (the Kyoto protocol for instance) are primarily geared towards reducing energy emissions and replacing traditional energy sources with sustainable alternatives. The recently released IPCC report on the potential of RES found that: ‘With consistent climate and energy policy support, renewable energy sources can contribute substantially to human well-being by sustainably supplying energy and stabilizing the climate’.

The Summer Academy 2012 is therefore dedicated to the integration and expansion of RES as an answer to climate change, and will focus on the challenges surrounding the evolution of energy supply, moving from a traditional, fossil-fuel based energy system to one based on renewable sources. Researchers and professionals alike will gain access to the latest information and interdisciplinary findings on policy issues, economic hurdles and legal frameworks pertinent to the integration of renewables and to energy efficiency, and ultimately the mitigation of climate change.

Agenda
The international Summer Academy 2012 - Energy Transition: Expansion and Integration of Renewable Energy Sources - will take place in Greifswald and in Berlin from July 21-28. The program will start on Saturday the 21st in the charming coastal town of Greifswald with an introductory workshop as well as a visit of the nuclear power station Lubmin, before closure the largest nuclear plant in East Germany. The program will be complemented with leisure activities. On Monday the 23rd the Academy will move to Berlin, where the applied environmental research institute IKEM (Institute for Climate protection, Energy & Mobility) has set up a comprehensive 5-day program of seminars and lectures on contemporary challenges surrounding renewable energy expansion and integration, from energy storage to grid issues.

Monday
World energy consumption: Underlying causes, future trends and RES case studies
Tuesday
Legal and policy frameworks on climate change and the role of RES integration, their effectiveness and future developments
Wednesday
New/high potential energy technologies: energy storage (power-to-gas) and energy efficiency

Thursday
Energy grids: expansion and reinforcement challenges to further RES integration

Friday

Grand closing conference in Berlin - Generation, Storage and Integration: RES in the Baltic Sea Region
-
The Baltic Sea region offers a unique combination of abundant natural resources, diversity in cultures and policy and a vast potential for further RES development. Acquired knowledge and experience over the past week will turn to practical application as experts from the region will shed light on the current state of RES, likely developments, and what the major challenges and delays in the process are. Special attention will be paid to the technical, economic and legal challenges facing the offshore wind industry. The end of the Academy will be marked with a convivial evening program with the participants and the teaching faculty.

Background

For 9 years now, the Summer Academy serves as an interdisciplinary and intergenerational forum for highly qualified young researchers and professionals working on energy and/or environment issues. This gives the new generation of researchers and practitioners access to valuable experience and insights by connecting them with one another and with experienced professionals. By incorporating professionals from the business sector, the event creates a much-needed link between research and industry, both sides are able to learn from and influence each other in a mutually beneficial manner: ensuring the relevance of research carried out and practice based on the latest findings. After all, the value of scientific findings and policy solutions ultimately lies in their practical application.
Each year, the event addresses a topical issue in the field of energy and the environment. This year the focus lies on the challenges surrounding the evolution of energy supply, moving from a traditional, fossil-fuel based energy system to one based on renewable sources. Researchers and professionals alike will gain access to the latest information and interdisciplinary findings on policy issues, economic hurdles and legal frameworks pertinent to the integration of renewables and to energy efficiency.

Applications
Participation is open to all researchers and practitioners with a university degree and/or significant work experience in energy and environmental policies. Please fill in the attached application form and send it back to us by April 27th, 2012. Late applications will only be considered subject to availability of places.
